4200 Series Troubleshooting Guide
Problem:
Constant Mechanical Noise

This noise can be stopped only by turning the printer OFF. A constant mechanical noise indicates a possible problem with the cooling fan. A noise only when the printer is printing indicates a possible printhead carriage, ribbon, or paperfeed problem. This noise may be accompanied by a message relating to a carriage motor error, ribbon motor error, or paper advance problem.

  1. Inspect the printhead carriage assembly for obstructions. With power OFF, manually advance the carriage to see if movement is free. A printhead may have a print wire snagging the ribbon.

  2. Turn the ribbon advance knob to inspect the ribbon for any binding on a ribbon guide or print wire. If the ribbon is damaged it must be replaced.

  3. Visually check for jammed or binding paper. Check for free paper movement in the mechanism.
    1. Flip paper release lever forward
    2. Loosen tractor feed flap
    3. Move paper up/down in the mechanism
