TECH BULLETIN NO#: 99-Driver-001
PROBLEM/SYMPTOM:
Understanding Driver use and Microsoft case number.
CAUSE:
How windows will reset fonts and how to use driver for text output only.
SOLUTION/PROCEDURE:
The OTC text drivers will work in Access and Crystal Reports by following these steps in starting new templates or spreadsheets. Microsoft has also documented a case number for addressing default font use by Windows. Output Technology has not been given a date when this patch will be available to you. The case number at Microsoft is "SRX990112602002", please reference this case number in any correspondence you generate to Microsoft.
- Load application, "New".
- Click "File", highlight "Print"and click.
This should show what printer is defined. Ensure that OTC is the printer listed. Click on "Cancel".
- Click "File", highlight "Page Setup"and click.
- Select form setting or set custom size of you form in "Paper Size"tab.
- Remove all margins set in "Margins"tab, change all to "0". Click on "OK"button.
Windows does two things incorrectly at this point, first off the default font sets to our 10cpi font. The "Tab"key is tied to this default font 10cpi. This means that if you want to use our 12cpi font, but, Tab 1 or more times to the location you want, 10cpi tabs are embedded with 12cpi text and the out come causes unnecessary head cycles and increases print time. The solution to this is to first select the CPI font to be used, "Space"the cursor to the location and then type in the text. When you move to another field, windows may reset your font back again to 10cpi, change to your desired CPI font. Please limit Tab use and default font changes when you are building this database or spread sheet.
If you are using a pre-written template or a shared file, the graphic properties may be a part of the file. The Output Technology text only drivers are for ASCII output only; graphic data is striped from the data stream to the printer and may generate undesirable output.
SUMMARY:
Remember TrueType fonts or other graphic data properties are striped out of the data stream when using OTC text only drivers. Re-write templates or start new ones using the above listed procedures.
