Main Logic PCB Installation Considerations
SUBJECT: Main Logic PCB Installation Considerations.
PRODUCT: LM1000 Model 5 & Model 6.
ORIGINATOR: Bob Russell
DATE: 01/18/94
TECH BULLETIN NO: 93-LM1000-157
PROBLEM/SYMPTOM:
During the replacement process of a Main Logic Board (LM1000 Controller), compatibility considerations must be observed.
The following categories are covered in this document;
a. Versions of Logic Controller Boards.
- Dual Sided Controller Board
- Single Sided Controller Board
b. Versions of ROM Cards.
- Board with socketed PROMS.
- Board with surface mount ROMS.
c. Versions (Raster Image Processor) RIP Firmware.
- LM1000 Model 5
- LM1000 Model 6
d. Versions of (Engine Controller) EC Firmware.
- Firmware required for the Dual Sided Controller Board.
- Firmware required for the Single Sided Controller Board.
SOLUTION/PROCEDURE:
a.LOGIC CONTROLLER BOARD:
The OTC part number for the Controller PCB Kit is now 046-00310-XX.
This Kit is compatible with either the Model 5 or Model 6.
NOTE: The ROM card, with RIP Firmware, is no longer included with the Controller PCB Kit. If the ROM card is required it must be ordered separately.
The ROM card containing the correct version of (Model 5 or Model 6) RIP Firmware, must be installed during the replacement of the Controller Board.
Dual Sided Board: 040-00131-XX
This board can be identified by the method of component population. The components on this board populate both sides of the board (DUAL SIDED).
040-00131-00 was updated to 040-00131-01, removed an underrated filter cap.
040-00131-01 was updated to 040-00131-02, reworked parallel port to improve strobe response. This will eliminate the double printing of characters when connected to a HOST/COMPUTER having high speed driver logic.
040-00131-02 was updated to 040-00131-03, added terminating resistor to the PMRDY "NOT"line. R200 10K, between C132 (+5Vdc side) to J7-6.
EXAMPLE:
The Summary Page Printout will show "EC Firmware REV: 001-017"which
translates to V1.17.
This board is compatible with either style of ROM card, as long as the RIP
Firmware on the ROM card is;
- V4.X5 for the LM1000 MOD 5.
- V4.X6 for the LM1000 MOD 6.
Single Sided Board: 040-00135-XX
The components on this board populate only one side of the board (SINGLE SIDED).
040-00135-00 was updated to 040-00135-01, improving noise immunity by adding ground strip.
040-00135-01 was updated to 040-00135-02, reworked parallel port to improve strobe response. This will eliminate the double printing of characters when connected to a HOST/COMPUTER having high speed driver logic.
EXAMPLE:
The Summary Page Printout will show "EC Firmware REV: 010-019"which translates to V10.19.
This board is compatible to either style of ROM card, as long as the RIP Firmware on the ROM card is;
- V4.75 or later for the LM1000 MOD 5.
- V4.76 or later for the LM1000 MOD 6.
b.ROM BOARD:
Surface mount and through-hole ROM cards have the same functionality and can be interchanged. The latest versions of firmware are generally of the surface mount variety. Only the KITs with numbers starting with 046- should be used to order these spare cards.
MOD 5 ROM card with a socketed chip set.
*046-00272-01, Field Replaceable Unit (FRU), contains:
040-00107-00 or later, ROM board with socketed PROM set,
containing Firmware V4.75 or later.
MOD 6 ROM board with a socketed chip set.
*046-00273-02, Field Replaceable Unit (FRU), contains:
040-00108-00 or later, ROM board with socketed chip set,
containing Firmware V4.76 or later.
* Due to higher cost socketed ROM cards may not be available, use the surface mount card instead.
MOD 5 ROM card with surface mount chip set.
046-00272-02, Field Replaceable Unit (FRU), contains:
There are two styles of boards with surface mount chips;
- 040-00139-01 or later, ROM card with surface mount chip set containing Firmware V4.75 or later.
- 040-00156-00 or later, ROM card with surface mount chip set containing Firmware V4.75 or later.
MOD 6 ROM card with surface mount chip set.
046-00273-03, Field Replaceable Unit (FRU), contains:
There are two styles of boards with surface mount chips;
- 040-00153-00 or later, ROM card with surface mount chip set containing Firmware V4.76 or later.
- 040-00157-00 or later, ROM card with surface mount chip set containing Firmware V4.76 or later.
c. RIP FIRMWARE
V4.75 or later for LM5 & V4.76 or later for LM6, must be used with the Single Sided Controller Boards, otherwise the controller will not start up.
RIP Firmware History:
V3.05
- First production released version.
V3.75
- Would lock up if FORM FEED is pressed in hex dump mode. Form width allowed a setting too wide. Escape sequences printed on font page may be wrong. Serial interface problems. Downloaded Scalable fixed pitch fonts don't work. Horizontal adjustments are lost on power down.
V4.15/4.16
- Serial and Optional I/O interface problems, various
lock up problems, various display and menu problems.
V4.25/4.26
- Timing would not allow this version to work with Single Sided Boards.
V4.75/4.76
- Can be used with either Double Sided and Single Sided boards. Must be used in Single Sided boards. Corrected a serial XON problem, an auto switching problem, an auto eject problem, various lock-ups, display and menu problems.
d.EC FIRMWARE
Double Sided Main Logic Controller Board, 040-00131-XX, EC location U75, logic part is 27C512/27C010. Only use firmware version 1.20 (001-020) or later, P/N 043-00202-09 or later.
NOTE: EC PROM socket (U75) is a 32 pin device. When using the 28 pin device (27C512) the chip must be set back in socket.
Pin 1 on the 28 pin CHIP goes in pin 3 on the 32 pin socket.
Firmware History:
V1.03 (001-003)
- First production released version.
V1.09 (001-009)
- Corrects a Paper Jam message during a paper out condition, continuous unintentional paper feeds, and a false Fuser Failure Error.
V1.14 (001-014)
- Corrects several TOP-OF-FORM (TOF) problems and several image creeping problems.
V1.15 (001-015)
- Corrects a toner smudging during start-up, the
smudge fades out on subsequent pages. Metric size
corrections. Corrects TOF problem on form sizes that are not even multiples of 1/2". Corrects TOF problem caused by Stop-on-Perf Mode changes.
V1.17 (001-017)
- Reduced stepper motor hold current to prevent motor overheating.
V1.20 (001-020)
- Prevents Laser on during mirror shutdown.
Single Sided Main Logic Controller Board, 040-00135-XX, EC location U67, logic part is 27C512/27C010. Only use firmware version V10.23 (010-023) or later, P/N 043-00310-04 or later.
NOTE: EC PROM socket (U67) is a 32 pin device. When using the 28 pin chip (27C512) must be set back in socket. Pin 1 on the 28 pin CHIP goes in pin 3 on the 32 pin socket.
Firmware History:
V10.07 (010-007)
- First production released version.
V10.14 (010-014)
- Reduced stepper motor hold current to prevent motor overheating. Corrects a toner smudging during start-up, the smudge fades out on subsequent pages. Correct a lock up problem involving changing form size, form feed form out of printer, and reloading
form. Corrects TOF problem caused by Stop-on-Perf Mode changes. Corrects TOF problem when using form lengths ending in 1/4"or 3/4"size. Corrected a lock up after reloading form following a "PAPER JAM"error.
V10.16 (010-016)
- Corrected a power down write cycle timing problem to NVRAM. Switched to using the trailing edge of the tractor clock disk to improve TOF adjustment.
