False Motor Errors Due to Poor Grounding
SUBJECT: False Motor Errors Due To Poor Grounding.
PRODUCT: EUROLINE - 4240, 4260, 4280.
ORIGINATOR: Bob Russell
DATE: 01/18/94
TECH BULLETIN NO#: 93-4200-165
PROBLEM:
Due to a possible poor ground connection between the Motor Driver PCB &
the Motor Controller PCB, intermittent Motor Errors may occur. This poor
ground condition may exist only on units that have pop rivets holding the
card cage hinge brackets to the base frame. Units that have the hinges
attached by welds or screws do not exhibit this problem.
SYMPTOMS:
- Errors such as;
- "Ribbon Motor Err"
- "Paper Motor Err"
- "Carrg Motor Err"
- may appear in the LCD display. These errors can be reset by cycling
the power.
SOLUTION:
1. Secure hinges with screws.
Locate the two hinges that support the card cage. Are these hinges
fastened to the cabinet base by pop rivets or screws? Reference Figure 1 for details on replacing pop rivets with
screws. Install one screw in each hinge as per directions in Figure 1.
2. Add a ground strap.
Run a ground wire from the motor driver mounting screw (located in upper
control cage) to the motor controller mounting screw (located above the
main logic controller). The screw used to attach the ground strap to the
motor controller mounting stud, must be longer to allow for a more solid
connection. The longer screw has been added to the kit. Reference Figure
1 & 2 for more details.
Ground Strap P/N 020-00160-00 installed as per directions in Figure 1.
3. Motor Driver Board upgraded to reduce spurious faults.
- Motor Driver
- PCB P/N 040-00087-02 or later (4240/4260 only)
- PCB P/N 040-00128-02 or later (4280 only), replace as needed.
KIT P/N 046-00848-00 supports the grounding rework for the 4240/4260.
Note: The motor driver for the 4240/4260 (P/N 040-00087-XX) is not
compatible in a Model 4280.
KIT P/N 046-00849-00 supports the grounding rework for the 4280.
Note: The motor driver for the 4280 (P/N 040-00128-XX) is not
compatible in the Model 4240/4260. Route the ground strap through the
card cage access following the same route as the Motor Controller ribbon
cable. Dress ground cable towards the back of main cabinet under the card
cage to avoid contact with card cage resting foot.
