Output Technology, Corp 508 Compliance
The amendment to Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 was published
by the Access Board, an independent federal agency devoted to accessibility
for people with disabilities, on December 22, 2000.
This legislation requires that when federal agencies develop, procure, maintain
or use electronic and information technology, federal employees with disabilities
have access to and use of information and data that is comparable to the access
and use by federal employees who are not individuals with disabilities, unless
an undue burden would be imposed on the agency (includes members of the public
who are seeking information or services from a federal agency).
Accessibility has been incorporated into the Federal Acquisitions Regulations
(FAR) and has been effective since June 25, 2001.
Section 508 is broken up into three different categories of standards: technical;
functional performance; and information, documentation and support. Section
